Maurine LaCour has always had a heart for the military. As the wife of a Navy veteran, the men and women that serve our country have been a part of her life for just about as long as she can remember. It was that very same heart of compassion and support that brought the Remembering Our Military group at St. James Place to life.

Last October, 2020, Maurine saw a post online where people were talking about the military. It struck a chord in her, and she shared that she wanted to send a care package to anyone who had a family member overseas. The responses began pouring in, and right away she knew that she could “rally the troops” at St. James Place to show their appreciation and support for the men and women overseas. She quickly rang up her friend, Doris Roach, and the two worked together to create the “Remembering Our Military” group - ROM for short.

“The greatest blessing to me is that I feel a special connection to our members as we assemble and ship each care package,” said Maurine.

The ROM group has helped her grow closer, not just to the troops that she’s helping to support, but to her neighbors right here at St. James Place! She has since connected with the troops on Facebook and treasures the ability to connect and get to know them on a more personal level. On the other hand, the troops treasure her homemade pralines just as much!

Doris has been an instrumental part of the group from the very beginning.

“Mardi Gras Decorations!” was the reply when asked what her favorite packaged item she has sent overseas was. “I was thinking they could have a party, but instead they got very creative and decorated their jeep and sent us back a picture!”

Doris loves being able to participate, knowing that their small packages are helping to brighten the days and lessen the burden for the hardworking men and women overseas, as well as their families.

A group of more than 20 strong, the ROM group collects support from members of the SJP community as well as a few others around Baton Rouge. Building connections with our troops abroad, as well as their families locally, the ROM group cherishes every opportunity to support and share with those that fight for our country.
