Living Life Young

Here at St. James Place, age is nothing more than a number. Our residents challenge the idea that aging means you have to completely change the way you live your life. From things like bike riding and walking, to fishing and swimming, our community likes to make their younger selves proud by living active, vibrant lifestyles.

Take Wayne Achee, for example. At the ripe young age of 82, Wayne doesn’t feel a day over 60. Whether it’s his gym workouts, several weekly rounds of golf or just relaxing with his fishing pole in hand at the St. James’ lake, Wayne’s golden years are truly that as he spends his time doing the things he loves without missing a beat.

If you’ve been around the St. James Place campus more than once, chances are you’ve seen Barrie Griffin making her rounds. She walks four laps around the 52-acre campus perimeter six times per week! Mentally and physically, Barrie believes that staying active is the key to staying young and sharp. Soon to turn 80, Barrie says she doesn’t feel any older than she did several years ago. “My husband says I’m stealing,” laughs Barrie. “He says I’m old enough to be wise, but young enough to enjoy life!”

Marie Carpenter is a newer resident at St. James Place, who has also decided to dive headfirst right into all that the campus has to offer — especially the pool! The place she calls her “comfort zone”, Marie is a lifelong swimmer who hasn’t let her age slow down her pace. Whenever she takes to the pool, she remembers the good times she’s had in the water, including her time as a girl scout where she learned to perfect her strokes, as well as the years she spent competing as a synchronized swimmer at Duke University.

The Lafleurs are no exception either - and some would say they’re aging in reverse! According to them, 90 feels like the new 70 as they’re filling their time with just about every activity you can think of. From Joyce’s painting & quilting to Dyer’s daily bike rides, “boring” is the absolute last word you would use to describe the way they’re living out their golden years. Keeping their brains active and their bodies moving, they embrace the busy lifestyle of St. James Place living.

At St. James Place, our residents live life their way. With our big, beautiful campus and a wealth of amenities to enable every lifestyle, we’re here to help our community live as happily, engaged and active as possible.
