Spring in Louisiana: Step Outside and Explore St. James Place

Baton Rouge, one of the best places to live in Louisiana, is known for its beautiful scenery, fun events and intriguing attractions. St. James Place, a charming and welcoming retirement community, is located in the heart of Baton Rouge. Here you’ll find the serenity of nature and opportunities for engagement with your community. Here’s how you can take advantage of the beautiful spring weather both on- and off-campus at St. James Place in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Explore the great outdoors

On our scenic and extensive campus, residents take advantage of many outdoor group activities like the gardening committee, where neighbors help create beautiful landscapes while making new friends and following their passions. This committee participates in two large projects every year: an Arbor Day celebration and the Annual Daffodil Planting. These major enhancements make St. James Place even more beautiful. The gardening committee also participates in smaller ventures, including balcony planters, fertilizing the butterfly and camelia gardens and removing aging foliage as needed. That’s not all, though—at St. James Place, residents can enjoy fishing by the Duplantier Swamp. Or, if you’d rather just watch the fish, you can feed the koi in our delightful pond. Enjoy a picnic with your friends as you check out the wildlife on the water.  Maybe you want to take a walk with your neighbors. On our large campus, we have several accessible trails you can explore on a beautiful sunny day. At St. James Place, you’ll find many opportunities to take in the captivating environment outdoors.

Off campus, citizens of Baton Rouge can enjoy the 28.5 acre Cohn Nature Preserve, which features more than 300 species of native trees and shrubs, a fruit orchard, butterfly garden and bamboo collection. Feel like exploring the swamplands? Consider taking an airboat or kayak tour by Arthur Matherne, Inc. Learn about the ecology of Louisiana while making your way through the dense swamp. No matter if you consider yourself a pro golfer or just a beginner, the J.S. Clark Golf Course, a 9-hole course with a PGA style practice area, will be the perfect place to perfect your game. Maybe you and your furry friend are looking for an adventure. Take your pet to the BREC dog park on Harrell’s Ferry that stretches more than 1.2 acres and features separate play areas for large and small dogs. If you’re looking to really experience the culture of Baton Rouge, explore Baton Rouge’s gorgeous downtown area, which is full of exciting restaurants and unique experiences.

Spring showers bring indoor fun

Do spring showers have you stuck indoors? Don’t worry, there’s still plenty to do in Baton Rouge no matter the weather! Consider viewing the amazing masterpieces at the LSU Museum of Art at the Shaw Center for the Arts. This dynamic venue hosts one of the largest university-affiliated art collections in the south, meaning you’ll be able to enjoy this cultural experience again and again. For a fun day with the family during the rainy season, consider visiting an entertaining location like the indoor Blue Zoo Baton Rouge, where the grandkids can touch stingrays, birds and even reptiles. This can serve as the perfect opportunity to learn about the wildlife from both the swamp and farther away. Or consider visiting Red Stick Social entertainment venue in the mid-city of Baton Rouge.  The kids can enjoy a game of bowling while you and your date spend the night enjoying dinner and live music. You could even have the whole family do a friendly bowling competition.

That way, you can stay active even on rainy days. Plus, you can take advantage of holistic wellness services like massage therapy to rejuvenate you.
